Clients Right After Unethical Treatment By Psyhotherapist

By Beryl Dalton

Mental health professionals such as psychotherapists treat clients governed by a strict code of regulations. They are sworn to dedication to ethical and professional excellence as well as commitment to service, public participation and advocacy. Despite all these checks and balances, patients still report unethical treatment by psyhotherapist.

It is imperative that a client fully comprehends the importance of law and ethics to a practice, a psychotherapist practice is founded on a strong ethics and law foundation. Without ethical principles, the practice does not exist does not have the need to either. Therefore, if a therapist breaches one of the ethical principles, it is not only a breach to a patients rights but also an insult to the practice.

So what exactly is unethical treatment? It may involve confidentiality breach, where the psychotherapist reveals information concerning your sessions without your consent. Also, any romantic or sexual gestures from the therapist are a no-no. Encounters outside the practice are also prohibited. Friendships and any other type of relationship likely to affect the psychotherapist performance or harm the client are also considered unethical.

It is not acceptable, ethically, for mental health professional to bill their clients wrongly. Since the commencement of the therapy sessions, he or she should explain to the client their financial and billing policies and stick to it. For instance, they should not bill a client for a service that is already covered. Besides, they should not exaggerate or write less damaging diagnosis for whatever reason.

Breach of ethical principles is a serious crime capable of destroying careers. Before making the serious allegations, you need to be sure that your right to ethical treatment was actually violated and not a mere hunch. Talk to your friends, another therapist or a lawyer for a way forward. If they were indeed violated, you are free to come out come with all your guns blazing.

If you are now sure that your right to ethical treatment was indeed violated, you can choose the way forward from a pool of several options. Confronting them and talking to them about their questionable behavior is the first option that many people prefer. Another option may be to report them to their particular licensing or professional body. If your lawyer advises so, you may also file a law suit.

Just to be clear, if you are in a crisis or your life is under threat, law enforcement officers should be involved right away. Termination is also an option as mentioned above. However, do not hide by abandoning the program or ignoring their phone calls. If you wish to terminate, confront them and say you would like to withdraw from therapy as your rights were violated.

Living with an emotional pain is difficult. Having to talk to someone else who is a total stranger is also not easy. Therefore, therapists who take advantage of this vulnerability and gullibility of clients should not be allowed to continue practicing. Let us all ensure that only those who follow ethical principles help find our path again.
