Asian Cosmetic Surgery in Australia

By Tracey Lee

There is an increasing trend toward cosmetic surgery within the Asian community in Australia as it becomes more affordable, more readily available and more accepted. The trend of suffering for beauty is nothing new for many Asian cultures, with practices such as foot binding being common place in the past. The most popular procedure in cosmetic surgery for Asians is double eyelid surgery, but other procedures such as breast enlargements, rhinoplasty and a range of other procedures are becoming increasingly popular.

In some countries such as Japan and Korea, specialist Asian cosmetic surgeons are performing over 100 double eyelid surgeries a year making the procedure almost as popular as mole removal. The eye opening procedure is more common amongst women but is gaining increasing popularity with men as well. The procedure can be performed in three different ways, full incisional, partial incisional or non incisional and depending on the results requested and the technique used, has little or no downtime for the recipient. The procedure can be done under general or local anaesthetic and usually results in a small amount of swelling and occasionally some light bruising.

There is much debate over whether these types of Asian cosmetic surgery are striving towards a more westernised look as a beauty ideal. A leading Asian cosmetic surgeon in Australia strongly denies these claims saying that the procedures simply make the most of Asian features and that ".... if Caucasians have rhinoplasty to reduce their nose size, are they being Asianised?". He also claims his patients never produce a picture of a western person as an example of how they would like their surgery to turn out.

Although it is hard to determine the cause for the increase in cosmetic surgery for Asians, it seems that more and more people are lining up for the procedures. This increase in demand is seeing a surge in the number of specialists in the field, many of whom are coming from an Asian background giving them a better understanding of the desires and needs of their clientele.

Along with double eyelid surgery, other popular cosmetic procedures for Asians include:

* Brow lift surgery for Asians, which improves the shape and position of the eyebrow and opens the eye.

* Rhinoplasty - to improve the bridge shape, reduce tip and nostril size.

* Breast enhancement - increases breast size.

* Fillers and Botox - reduces wrinkles and slims the face.

* Laser Skin Whitening - for whiter, brighter, clearer, tighter skin.

With the introduction of new less invasive procedures and the decline in the cost of equipment such as cosmetic laser machinery, the cost and availability of Asian cosmetic surgery within Australia should continue to become more accessible to the average Asian, and see a continuation in the growth of the field of specialty Asian cosmetic surgeons.
